It isn’t really a big secret that calling a black caller the “N-word” 11 times was going to get radio industry veteran Dr. Laura Schlessinger in a bit of trouble. On the contrary, Dr. Laura now bears the stench of history. And the heat in that kitchen is apparently too much, because “Dr. Laura quits” headlines are everywhere.
Dr. Laura quits radio show
PopEater reports that the only thing keeping Dr. Laura here still is that her contract has yet to expire. The conservative radio relationship diva told CNN’s “Larry King Live” that she’s making the move because she “wants to regain her First Amendment rights.”. Schlessinger did once believe that Howard Stern needed those rights taken from him.
Dr. Laura thinks this is really an empowering move on her part.
“I want to be able to say what’s on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry – some special interest group deciding this is a time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates and sponsors,” she told King.
Apology not accepted by Schlessinger
The doctor says she “wasn’t dissing anybody” although she does apologize for using the N-word. The production company for Dr. Laura has claimed they’re just letter her “pursue opportunities” rather than work with them. Schlessinger also has just lost two major sponsors, General Motors and Motel 6.
Dr. Laura’s next part
Dr. Laura has quit before, says TMZ. In 1999, CBS almost gave her a TV talk show. However, Dr. Laura added the condition that she would only work for CBS if it would “muzzle” Howard Stern and not allow him to speak ill of her on his own show. CBS didn’t like that condition. Dr. Laura did do a TV show for a little while for Paramount after. In one episode, she bashed homosexuals and faced the outrage of gay rights groups. A campaign began at StopDrLaura.com which made it so 170 advertisers left the show completely. Eventually, Dr. Laura got out of Dodge.
