Joe Manchin, West Virginia governor, appointed Carte Goodwin to replace Democratic Robert Byrd, who died June 28, within the Senate. Unemployed Americans whose benefits have expired will have a new hero in Goodwin. As Byrd’s successor, he is expected to provide the vote that finally passes a jobs bill that will extend unemployment benefits that has been stalled by a Republican filibuster.

The 36 year old Carte Goodwin is the youngest senator filling in for Byrd, who was the oldest senator at age 92. His first vote will be critical, according to CBS News, to senate. The Senate will vote on extending unemployment benefits Tuesday morning after Goodwin is sworn in.
Unemployment benefits being extended not in Republican plans
The seat left vacant by Byrd has left Senate democrats without the 60 votes they need for the unemployment extension. 73 more weeks would be added to unemployed workers for benefits. Republicans think that an unemployment extension would make the deficit worse. The other side argues the economy would get better when all that money is instantly put back to the economy and is spent. A report on all247news.com said that a Bloomberg poll showed 70 percent of American adults were more concerned with reducing the nation’s unemployment rate than reducing the national deficit.
Senator position between Carte Goodwin and Joe Manchin?
Carte Goodwin no gets to be in senate until the November general election comes along. The Huffington Post reports that Goodwin already has ties to West Virginia’s Senate delegation. Rochelle, his wife, is a director for his colleague, Senator Jay Rockefeller. Rockefeller said that Goodwin was “unquestionably among West Virginia’s best and brightest” in a statement made on Friday. Right now, nobody thinks Goodwin will run in November. Joe Manchin, his former boss, has already placed his dibs on the seat.
